In Trinidad and Fishing The Bocas...

It's been good to get back to Trinidad. This time it was to give the tarpon fishing in the Bocas a try. I understood from my captain, Danny Agostini, that the Trinidad Tarpon Bash tournament is no longer. He stated it was replaced by the TDC of T/T (Trinidad and Tobago) and is called Tarpon Thunder. We are staying at The Crews Inn in the northwest point of Chaguaramas (www.crewsinn.com ).

Though Art Blank and I were not part of the tournament, there were many boats in the Bocas. We have fished the last 1 and 1/2 days and have been in the midst of a low point in silver king action. I did manage a 50-pounder, which was a thrill to catch alongside the lush mountains! All of us that pursue tarpon know them to be unpredictable at times.

When we did not fish in the middays, we explored the Asa Wright Nature Center, and of course the growing and charming preservation district.

For now, thanks to...

BACK FROM ST. AUGUSTINE/STILLWATER CHARTERS!.... Images by Art Blank

Art Blank and I just returned from some awesome angling in beautiful St. Augustine. In 2 days, we released 14 giant redfish. Our smallest fish was around 18 pounds. My top fish was 30 pounds, while Art released a monster estimated at 35 pounds. In addition, we also released a dozen flounder. Thanks again to Captains Tom Winrow, Vaughn Cochran and the Barrier Island Inn!

Interim Field Test Results....

Offshore Angler Ocean Master- OM 50 Spinning Reel- http://www.basspro.com/
Offshore Angler Gold Cup Inshore Spinning Rod- 7 Feet- http://www.basspro.com/

It's been two full months of tarpon action, specifically 23 silver kings from 40 to 80 pounds and the two above items have performed flawlessly. There have been no parts failures on the Ocean Master reel and the drag continues to be smooth and the bail roller is rolling. I have done no maintenance other than lightly wash off and spray-oil the reels. The rods have absorbed tremendous punishment and never get a kid's glove treatment when my 16-foot Hewes becomes a tarpon skiff and workboat under the hot summer Florida sun.

Looking forward To St. Augustine, Captain Cochran, and Some Pogie "Madness"...

Photog. Art Blank and I are looking forward to traveling to wonderful St. Augustine and fishing the pogie schools off the beaches with Captain Vaughn Cochran. It's a novel adventure that has us hankering for some rod-bending action with tarpon, jacks, and more.
