The End of The Endless Summer.....
As is clear from the public NOAA satellite map, the dog days of summer of Florida have come to an end. Now the anxieties of Indian summer start to peak with the mushrooming and whirling wind and water devils of what the techies call Atlantic basin cyclones. Newbies have learned that a slow moving tropical storm (cyclone) can carry rains that flood and kill more poor and poorly guarded Haitian folks than stronger fast-moving hurricanes (cyclones, too) that rake more wealthy and well-prepared places like New Orleans to the north.
In the last week or so, the weather has been a real pip. Tropical storm Faye stitched the Sunshine state a few times with such solid showery ropes that it seemed our peninsula resembled a tied-down "giant" in Gulliver's Travels. Interestingly, despite this massive soaking and a big rise in the Big "O", there's still whining-but not sufficient explaining- as to why the "drought" was not mitigated.
Now comes Labor Day, September the first. This is our worst month for cyclones and it's off to a bang. Florida's panhandle is getting slammed with tropical storm winds and possible tornadoes from Hurricane Gustav, while the central east coast of the state is beginning to be battered by waves from newly-formed Hurricane Hanna.
We may return to the flat calm bathtub mornings, cicadas chirping in the shade, and afternoon "buildup" showers from the Everglades, but for now, it's the end of THAT endless summer.
